Before upgrading their material handling system, Quadco faced significant challenges in their assembly and welding area. The facility relied on a single large crane to move heavy components into a robotic welding cell, which led to frequent downtime and workflow interruptions. In some cases, assembly employees attempted to lift parts manually, increasing the risk of injury. Quadco had previously explored jib cranes as a potential solution, but was concerned about the added tension on their concrete floors.

A manufacturer of industrial products was moving their operation to a larger facility. Many operational inefficiencies were addressed during the move, including congestion and idle materials in the painting bays. Since their painting bays processed a wide variety of materials, a dynamic solution was necessary.

Tuohy is a manufacturer of high-end office furniture based in Chatfield, Minnesota. The company’s purpose has remained the same throughout its three generations as a family business — to “provide furnishings that make people’s lives more productive, pleasing, and treasured.”
Huhtamaki is a global provider of sustainable food packaging solutions. Its two facilities in New Vienna, Ohio, specialize in making plastic Chinet tableware and ice cream lids. Huhtamaki’s manufacturing process relies on large plastic injection molding presses. NOMAD® XW freestanding cranes solved the problem and eliminated the need for outside contractors, putting Huhtamaki back in control of its processes. To date, EMH has installed four low headroom, high capacity (20-25 ton) NOMAD freestanding crane systems in each of Huhtamaki’s four main production rooms.

Engineered Material Handling (EMH) recently expanded its Crane Kit electrical bay production capacity to keep up with customer demand. After integrating its new EG Series Hoist into their G-Series Crane Kit, EMH made it easier than ever for customers to design, manufacture and install their own cranes. A variety of new capabilities include enhanced trolley adjustment.

Over the last 70 years, Wells Concrete has provided architectural and structural precast product solutions for commercial construction from Canada to New Mexico and Indiana to Colorado. For the recent Wells Concrete building construction addition in Colorado, four ZLK twin-girder twin-hook EMH Cranes with summation devices were specified, each having a 25-ton capacity on 650-foot runways with 85-foot spans. EMH cranes were chosen because of consistent high quality; and because EMH customizes, tailors and fine tunes its crane and equipment solutions to match customer needs.

When a large international manufacturer needed a reliable crane transfer system for its aircraft repair facility, Engineered Material Handling (EMH) was Crane-Tec’s logical choice to provide the hoists. Special considerations included large capacity requirements for the transfer crane, an independent runway and monorail structure, and large runway spans and loads. The team’s design solution, a 22.5-ton, top running, double girder crane system with a single transfer beam that included eighteen 15-ton interlocking transfer monorail beams. EMH E-Series Hoists are reliable performers with designs that are especially suited for applications requiring low headroom lift.

EMH was contacted by Standard Aero, an international aircraft-engineering firm to help develop a unique Jet Engine Test Stand for a GE cold weather test facility. The hoist application had to be capable of precision operation in minus 40° centigrade temperatures. Two EMH Hoists were run in tandem and tested to 125% of their 50-ton capacity, 25-ton duty on each hoist. With intense cold, every facet of the hoist application had to be custom-engineered and required a factory 125% load test as well and witnessed by GE engineering.

With the help of Handling Concepts, a local distributor and EMH, Capitol Aluminum & Glass found a better ergonomic solution, the EMH AL Systems™ workstation crane. Instead of having laborers pick up and then move heavy glass and aluminum components by hand using just a vacuum suction cup, AL Systems provided a cost-effective labor saving solution that enables workers to easily pick up and move heavy components between workstations. The AL System is ideal for lifting loads up to 2,200 lbs., is easily assembled and positioned, or even easily disassembled and reassembled.

Great Lakes Shipyard recently installed a new overhead bridge crane in its main fabrication building. Built by Engineered Material Handling (EMH), the new overhead crane incorporates two independently operated 5-ton lifts, which gives the installation a combined capacity of 10 tons.

When a machinery manufacturer making microchips needed a device to precisely position parts in a clean room test situation, the EMH AL System™ Aluminum Crane with motorized Low Headroom End Trucks provided the ideal solution. Since completion, the customer could not be more pleased with the installation. The machine manufacturer has already contracted for a second EMH AL System.

With new Ultra Low Headroom End Trucks and AL System™ Cranes, Engineered Material Handling (EMH) solves the problem. With most workstation cranes, bridges hang below the runway. Consequently, the distance between the support steel and hoist trolley takes up about 30 inches. With new EMH Low Profile End Trucks, you can now raise the bridge within 3 inches of the overhead obstruction, which positions the pin on the trolley about a foot to 13 inches from the height obstruction. Low dropped ceilings no longer present a problem because the bottom of the bridge easily clears the top of most test machinery.

Although EMH NOMAD Crane Systems have load capacities that range from 2 to 10 tons, Acculift customized and installed a solution to fit Degelman needs exactly, using a 3-ton capacity NOMAD Crane. With bolted assembly, placement of the crane was seamless and consistent with Degelman positioning needs. Kleckner said, “Not only did the crane work well from a standpoint of functionality, the installation appeared as if it had been part of building design since day one.”

When WEISS installed its first of three modular NOMAD® Free Standing Workstation Cranes, WEISS needed seven tons of capacity, a 40-foot width, and an 80-foot runway. NOMAD is readily available in overall widths up to 50 feet and overall heights up to 25 feet, with capacities from 2 tons to 10 tons. Plus, NOMAD Cranes offer manufacturers flexibility, accommodating change. Base plate design allows most NOMAD Systems to be installed without footers. Bolted assembly enables them to be easily dismantled, relocated and reassembled.

ABB selected the EMH NOMAD® Free Standing Crane System, with capacities from 2-10 tons, to be an important component in the assembly of shunt bank capacitor assemblies. These large and heavy units weigh about 5 tons each and are about 12 feet by 12 feet square by 6 feet tall. The NOMAD System was part of ABB’s decision to relocate its capacitor operation from another facility in Canada. It was chosen based on cost competitiveness, lead-time availability, and its compatibility to include another EMH product solution within the same floor space.
