MHI and RMI Release New Cantilevered Rack Standard

The Rack Manufacturers Institute (RMI) of MHI recently released a new standard related to the design, testing and utilization of industrial steel cantilevered storage racks.  The standard, ANSI MH16.3-2016, Specification for the Design, Testing and Utilization of Industrial Steel Cantilevered Storage Racks, applies to free-standing and top-tied cantilevered storage racks made of cold-formed or hot-rolled steel members, and includes guidance on cantilevered storage rack with accessories such as decked shelves, shed roofs and canopies. 
The standard is intended to harmonize the provisions for cantilevered storage racks with the 2015 International Building Code (IBC) definition of Steel Storage Racks and other relevant industry standards by reference.  According to Victor D. Azzi, Ph.D., PE, “Having a separate standard for cantilevered storage racks will help clarify the characteristics and essential differences and requirements in the design, manufacture, construction, use, and behavior of cantilevered storage racks, as distinguished from the more conventional systems commonly known as ‘pallet rack’ or ‘selective rack.’”
“Development of ANSI MH16.03 started more than 15 years ago,” states Anne E. Russell, Corporate Research and Development Engineer of Steel King Industries and Vice Chair of the RMI Engineering Committee.  “Input was received from industry engineers, outside consultants, and other interested parties knowledgeable in the design of cantilevered storage racks, some of whom have already retired from the industry.  Without everybody’s input, this could not have been done.”   
The standard is the result of RMI’s recognition of the need to standardize performance and design criteria for the proper utilization of cantilevered storage racks. The standard, formulated under MHI procedures, has been approved by the American National Standards Institute (ANSI).  
“The specification presents state-of-the-art requirements for cantilevered storage racks in both seismic and non-seismic requirements,” Dan Clapp, Director of Engineering for Frazier Industrial Company and the Chair of the RMI Engineering Committee commented. “It has been submitted to the International Code Council and we are looking forward to its inclusion as a reference standard in the IBC.”
