Ergonomics is more than a buzzword today - it is a movement. Nationally, our demographics confirm we are aging and in deteriorating physical shape. This impacts the workplace, and good employers must think of their businesses in terms of ergonomics. EASE is the group within MHI focused solely on making work easier for people by improving the work environment. EASE members promote the practice of good ergonomics in the workplace by providing solutions across a broad spectrum of applications and industries. Activities include presentations at various industry events and development of non-commercial training materials. EASE also engages and collaborates with NIOSH and the academic community to enrich the group and enhance presentations and training materials. Lift Manufacturers Product Group (LIFT) members are the industry’s leading suppliers of industrial scissors lift equipment designed to move personnel, equipment, and product. The Robotics Group (TRG) are leading manufacturers, integrators, consultants, and component suppliers of robotic solutions designed specifically for warehousing and distribution applications. Traditionally, industrial robots in material handling applications have been limited to palletizing/depalletizing, conveyor picking, or other highly-repetitive tasks. Technology advancements are creating opportunities for robots and automated machinery in a wider variety of applications, including warehousing and distribution center activities. One of the top female executives in the water industry, Dr. Wilderer earned her doctorate in international business from Germany’s Carl von Ossietzky University of Oldenburg. She started her career at Siemens and has most recently served as the Chief Executive Officer of De Nora Water Technologies. The safety manager worries about twisted knees, broken ankles, medical bills, recovery periods, new recruits and overtime. He is not a coach, yet he has responsibility for 13 “teams.” He is the safety manager for a company that is the leader in corn flour and tortilla production. With plants around the United States that turn out 12 kinds of tortillas and a variety of tortilla chips, taco shells and snacks.
Preprinted newspaper inserts are fed into inserting drums at the rate of 25,000 per hour at the newspaper plant. At that speed, a pallet load of 14,000 inserts goes down pretty fast. “Feeding the drums required a lot of nonstop stooping and bending.” Installing, new equipment like a roll-on Level Loader has virtually eliminated back complaints.
When a busy plant in southern Arkansas hired a new manufacturing coach the production rate, as measured daily in person-hours per foot of conveyor section assembled, was averaging .250 or slightly higher. His job, he was told, was to "hold the line" at .250. To sustain that success, they had to maximize the efficiency of its own company, as well as its customers' operations.
This company produces a wide variety of custom seals and gaskets for the automotive industry. After knitting, cutting, and performing, the preformed products are hand-picked from large tubs and placed in a press.
Bricks and related products come in a variety of types, designs, and colors. But they all have one thing in common: they are heavy. The manual work of loading pallets with finished product involves constant lifting, reaching, and bending. In a typical case, bricks being transported on conveyors were unloaded from the waist-high conveyors onto pallets placed on the floor. Once loaded, forklift trucks move the pallets to storage. Each pallet contains over 400 bricks with loaded pallets weighing in at 2000 pounds. Loading the pallets was time consuming, hard on worker's backs, and led to frequent back complaints, worker fatigue, lost time, and ongoing productivity issues.

At the company’ production and warehouse facility, pallet loads of books used to travel on roller conveyors to workstations. Their employees would remove the volumes of books and pack them for warehousing and eventual shipment.
This is leading manufacturer of porcelain electric insulators produces a broad line of types and sizes. The electric insulators range from small 5 pound units to several hundred pounds.
The company in this case study specializes in the design and production of custom aluminum die-castings for a wide variety of industries. The company employs over 300 workers in a 135,000 square foot plant in Texas. Always alert to the well-being of its employees, management was especially concerned with a pallet-loading operation that involved constant stooping and bending as workers loaded finished castings for shipment. The plant manager had this concern in mind when he learned about a piece of equipment known as the Pallet Level Loader.
This company specializes in the production of office furniture. The production process includes a sanding operation to prepare the tops of conference tables for various stains and final finish.
A manufacturer of prescription drugs, recently added state- of-the-art work positioning tables to prevent back strain for its employees working on production lines. Since the addition of seven customized roll on Level Loaders there has been a lot less bending and lifting at the plant.
