16) Diverter

A device on a conveyor sortation system used to move a case/carton/piece off the main line.

17) Economic Justification

A comparison of alternative material handling equipment and the assessment of its impact on a company as far as taxes, depreciation, inflation and initial cost.  Generally does involve activity based costing.

18) End/side edge load capacity

The maximum amount of static load that can be applied to the edge of a platform (end or side) when the lift is in any raised position.

19) End/side axle load capacity

The maximum amount of single axle laod (in the case of rolling loads) which may be applied to the loading edge of a lift platform (end or side) when the lift is in its raised position.

20) Deflection

The amount of deformation or bending in a pallet or pallet component under load.

21) Fork entry

The opening between decks of a pallet, beneath the top deck or beneath the stringer notch, to admit forks.

22) Free span

The distance between supports in a storage rack.

23) Fixed-wall pallet container

Container that features an integrated pallet and has fixed side walls.

24) Four-way fork entry

Openings on all four sides of a pallet or the base of a pallet container, which allow fork truck handling.

25) Fork strap

Strap that links the fork openings on the base of a pallet container.  Fork straps can allow the use of a container on conveyors.

26) Efficient cubing

Refers to the optimal usage of the internal space of truck trailers.

27) Festoon

A configuration of small trolleys, support track, and electirical cable utilized to provide power to material handling devices while keeping the power cable out of harm's way.  The cable is looped or "festooned" by attaching to trolleys supported on a track. Thsi arrangment allows this cable to be "bunched" in an accordian-like fashion so as to keep the cable from becoming entangled in the movement pattern of the device it serves. Often utilized to "stretch" cable across the bridge of an overhead traveling crane.

28) Euro-pallet

The standard pallet in Europe. It is 1200 mm by 800 mm in dimension and has a wood block design between the top and bottom permitting four-way or four-sided entrance by lifting forks. Although other sizes exist in Europe, they are not nearly as prominent as the Euro-pallet.

29) Dynamic storage system

A storage system that provides varying means of either mechanically moving storage locations or loads within the systems so as to increase storage density and/or to increase storage, retrieval and order picking throughput.

30) Drive through rack

This rack is similar to drive-in rack except that the fork truck is capable of driving straight through the structure at any storage location along the aisle.
