16) Flooring

The design of a floor in a building or mezzanine is an important ingredient in the reliability and safety of that building or mezzanine.  Worker-friendly floors are imperative if ergonomic considerations are to be addressed.  The strength and stability of the floor is an important consideration as the floor must adequately support the machinery and moving vehicles utilized in the material handling system.

17) Hoist Manufacturers Institute

The Hoist Manufacturer's Institute, an affiliate of Material Handling Industry, is a trade association of manufacturers of overhead handling hoists.  The products of its member companies include hand chain hoists, ratchet lever hoists, trolleys, air chain and air rope hoists, and electric chain and electric wire rope hoists.    Hoist Manufacturers Institute 8720 Red Oak Blvd., Suite 201 Charlotte, NC 28217    Phone:  704-676-1199  Fax: (704) 676-1199 Hal Vandiver, Managing Director hvandiver@mhia.org

18) Hybrid truck

Material handling vehicle which crosses several categories, in function, in power source, etc.

19) Integrated Systems & Controls

Integrated Systems and Controls (ISC) refers to a product section of the Material Handling Industry of America. An integrated system is a desired state that generally refers to at least one of the three possible characteristics of an installed material handling system. First, although mechanical automation of the material flow properties of a system may be evident, it is the automation of the information flow associated with what is taking place, concurrently with the physical flow, that is the most defining characteristic. Secondly, an integrated system can be characterized by an unbroken, highly coordinated material flow link between successive stages in a manufacturing or warehousing operation where continuous flow is emphasized, and delays, waiting and intermediate storage minimized. Thirdly, an integrated system characteristically interfaces two or more material handling devices in order to form the bridge between work stations or other discrete points of origin and destination within the material flow cycle, with the goal being a high degree of mechanical coordination and the precise timing of movements. See also System Integrator , Consultant , and Controls .

20) Integrated Systems & Controls (ISC) Industry Group

Integrated Systems & Controls (ISC) members are the Industry’s leading suppliers of integrated material handling and controls systems. They supply systems worldwide and in virtually every major manufacturing and distribution sector.

21) Justmat

A comprehensive, user-friendly software decision support system geared for both individual and team use. Developed in visual basic for use on a PC in Microsoft Windows operating environment, the system supports the detailed analysis of discounted cash flow as well as the anticipated benefits that are not easy to quantify in terms of dollar returns. The software and the user manual come complete on a CD ROM. More details can be obtained by contacting the Material Handling Institute at 704-676-1190 or visiting the Institute Bookstore at www.mhia.org/vango/Core/orders/Default.aspx .

22) Laser

An acronym for light amplification by the stimulated emission of radiation.  Converts energy into laser light which in turn, can be used to control the direction and movement of material handling equipment.

23) LES

Logistics Execution Systems manage inventory, space, material handling equipment, labor and transportation resources to assure timely, error-free fulfillment and visibility of order status throughout the supply chain.

24) Lifting capacity

The rated load of a material handling lifting device (i.e., scissors lift, hoist) applied as uniformly distributed load.

25) Literature

The Material Handling Industry houses the Material Handling Institute Bookstore which contains a significant amount of literature related to the industry.  These offerings include introductory materials, standards and specifications, application guidelines for various types of equipment and "classic" papers on a variety of subjects penned by experts in the field of material handling equipment and processes. To access the literature offerings, please go to the MHIA Web site at www.mhia.org/bs .

26) Logistics

The organization, integration and utilization of the resources and transportation infrastructure needed to achieve the efficient flow of materials and information over the entire supply chain, or within selected subsystems.  See also, Supply Chain, Supply Chain Management, Material Handling, and Third Party Logistics. Note that all of referenced terms are highly interrelated and their definitions are frequently intermingled.

27) Lot reconciliation

The use of sensors to count the number of objects that pass a particular point in the material handling system for purposes of reconciling actual production or material movement with planned production.

28) Master carton

Utilized as a  larger uniform shipping carton for smaller packages or carton, the master carton serves to lessen material handling time and adds protection during shipping to the smaller items.

29) Master pack

A large box that is used to pack a number of smaller boxes or containers.  Aids in protecting the smaller cartons or packages and reduces the number of cartons to be handled during the material handling process.

30) Material Handling

Material Handling is the movement, storage, control and protection of materials, goods and products throughout the process of manufacturing, distribution, consumption and disposal.  The focus is on the methods, mechanical equipment, systems and related controls used to achieve these functions. See also, Supply Chain, Supply Chain Management, Logistics and Third Party Logistics. Note that all of referenced terms are highly interrelated and their definitions are frequently intermingled.
