16) Exchange pallet

Refers to a pallet that is used by several shippers whose ownership is transferred when the ownership of the unit load is transferred.

17) Tie down

A means by which a unit load is secured to a pallet, usually by means of stretch wrapping, shrink wrapping or strapping.

18) Stacking frames

Portable storage aids for attachment to pallets to enable stacking of unstable items two three or more units high.

19) Single row single face shelving

One generally continuous row of units joined together and side to side to be serviced from one service aisle.

20) Double row, double face shelving

One generally continuous row of units joined together, back to back and side to side to be serviced from two service aisles.

21) Stacking interlock

Refers to the mechanism that locks containers when they are stacked on top of another container.  This feature allows safe and secure shipping load units.

22) Automated dispenser

A series of vertical product dispensers which kick individual units of products out the bottom onto a conveyor.

23) Single deep selective rack

Rack structure which allows loads to be stored one unit deep on either side of an aisle.

24) Storage

The process or act of positioning and placing items (cartons, packages, pallet unit loads, etc.) in area set aside for holding these items or staging these items for shipment.

25) Multiple row, single face shelving

One generally continuous row of units joined together back to back to be serviced from one aisle for long items of considerable weight.

26) High rise shelving

Units in excess of 10'3" high and serviced by rolling ladders or mechanical non-entry stock pickers.  Normally tied together across the top over aisles.

27) Open upright shelving assembly

An assembly of two posts and one or more pair of side sway braces or panel sway braces welded, riveted or bolted together to form the side of a shelving unit.

28) Pallet

Generally constructed of plastic, metal or wood, a pallet is a piece of transportation/movement equipment utilized in the movement of unit loads. Usually "fork-liftable" in that it is designed to accept forks between the top and bottom platforms of the unit. A portable, horizontal, rigid platform used as a base for assembling, storing, stacking, handling and transporting goods as a unit load, often equipped with a superstructure.

29) Hoists

A suspended machinery unit that is used for lifting or lowering a freely suspended (unguided) load.  May be manually operated or electrically or pneumatically driven and may use chain or wire rope as its lifting medium.

30) Air hoist

A suspended machinery unit that is powered by pneumatically driven motors and is used to lift or lower a freely suspended (unguided) load.  Generally uses chain or wire rope as its lifting medium.
