The Hoist Manufacturers Institute, Inc. (HMI) is an independent trade association affiliated with the Material Handling Industry. HMI’s history starts in 1917 with the Electric Hoist Manufacture’s Association which was dissolved and replaced by the Hoist Manufacturer’s Association in 1956. During this time, hoist performance standards were created. In 1971, these performance standards were published under the Hoist Manufactures Institute name and were the source material for the current ASME Hoist Performance Standards. HMI is a voluntary association which was incorporated as the Hoist Manufacturers Institute, Inc. in 1968. ASC was presented with the material handling challenge when sales of its ovens increased.Demaio said: “In an effort to keep our shipping dates, we expanded and added another building, which required more overhead cranes. Previously, all of our production builds were being achieved in our two existing buildings that are at capacity.”Specht Industries was asked to design a 30-ton structure with three 5-ton capacity bridge cranes and a single 30-ton capacity bridge crane, with two 15-ton capacity hoists.Joe Specht, President and Owner at Specht Industries, said: “We overcame a 16-inch elevation slope within the facility, and larger-than-normal footings to meet seismic survey requirements. The customer needed to get the design, engineering, and the long lead time items within a two-monthperiod.”

JR Automation / Setpoint arrived at a need for additional cranes due to increasing workload projections and the lifting requirements involved. 5-ton capacity top-running, single-girder crane kits were provided by R&M Materials Handling Inc. and installed by its distributor, Hoj Innovations. The cranes, which span 47 ft. 9 in. and offer 21 ft. of lift, feature R&M’s SX low-headroom wire rope hoists, which help to maximize the lifting height of each system.

American Equipment LLC recommended the installation of three 7.5-ton capacity top-running, single girder cranes from R&M Materials Handling, Inc. A 20 ton capacity overhead crane and hoist from R&M Materials Handling Inc. has been installed 400 ft. beneath the surface at the U.S. Gypsum Company Shoals Mine in Indiana. The top running, double girder crane, principally chosen based on the short lead time offered by R&M and its Indiana-based distributor, CraneWerks, is being used to assemble and maintain equipment for the mine underground.
Food Process Solutions (FPS) is a rapidly expanding company that specializes in the design and manufacture of large refrigeration vessels for the food processing industry worldwide. Its new 80,000 sq ft facility in Richmond, B.C. increases the company’s production area by 80 percent with a 50 percent uplift in capacity anticipated once fully utilized. 18 QX 10-ton bridge cranes and runways have been installed to drive FPS’s enhanced manufacturing capacity.
The project required eight electric chain motors to move video projectors to various pre-set levels during worship services in a Houston, TX church.
The project required a 3 ton single girder, top running crane with two 3 ton wire rope hoists that measured and restricted the hoist’s combined total capacity to 3 ton. In one application, the hoists would be operated independently with a capacity of 3 ton per hoist. In the other application, the hoists would be used in tandem with a combined total capacity of 3 ton.
The project required a 40 ton capacity double girder top running crane with two 20 ton capacity hoists equipped with magnets for use in a CMAA Class D service steel plate handling application.

The runway was designed with a 40 ton zone at one end and a 10 ton zone at the other end. The hoist and crane had to have a maximum capacity of 40 ton but be restricted to 10 ton when needed.

Recently Bohl Crane, a R&M Materials Handling Master Distributor for over 20 years, completed a third major custom engineered overhead lifting equipment installation at TH Plastics, Inc’s Bowling Green, Ohio plant location. Stage rigging specialist TLS Productions Inc. (TLS) has supplied Stagemaker hoists by R&M Materials Handling and rigging expertise for two consecutive concert tours for contemporary Christian music artist Chris Tomlin.
Six R&M Materials Handling Inc. overhead crane systems were installed in just three weeks by R&M Master Distributor, Service Crane Co., at the newly constructed Kimura Foundry America Inc. factory in Shelbyville, Indiana. The facility is the company’s first venture outside its native Japan, where it provides rapid prototype (RP) castings and small lot production services.
With a new manufacturing facility planned that would be dedicated to the assembly of heavy industrial blowers and fans, New York Blower approached Hoosier Crane Service Company, its long-time crane service and installation partner, for help. Although many people do it, Cook said using standard hoists that are not designed for load turning is extremely dangerous because of side pulling and dynamic shocks that occur when the load suddenly turns. Milwaukee Crane & Equipment has installed a custom, 10-ton capacity overhead crane at Papé Machinery’s new construction and forestry equipment dealership in Ponderay, Idaho. The lifting equipment, manufactured by R&M Materials Handling Inc., had to accommodate extremely low headroom and satisfy the specifications that manufacturing giant John Deere requires of its distributors and regional partners. Over 40 cranes and hoists were installed in GILLIG LLC’s new Livermore, California facility as the bus manufacturer recently completed its relocation from Hayward to the Oaks Business Park. The newly constructed, custom-designed, 600,000 sq. ft. site continues the company’s 128-year tradition of manufacturing in the San Francisco Bay area. The new facility boasts 15 separate crane bays, ranging from 20 ft. to 100 ft. wide and 100 ft. to 1,150 ft. long, in addition to areas serviced by a number of jib cranes. CraneTech supplied R&M’s Spacemaster® SX wire rope hoists (ranging from 1 -10 ton capacities) and their LK electric chain hoists (ranging from ¼ - 2 ton capacities).
Everest Textile announced its plans to open a U.S. sports fabric weaving plant in 2016. The Taiwanese company took over a vacant, 400,000-square-foot industrial building in Forest City, North Carolina, creating an operation that supplies customers and brands like Nike, Columbia, Under Armour, North Face and Patagonia. Everest needed a simple and efficient method to feed its looms with yarn and fabric rolls, which can weigh 2,000 lbs. or more. The project required eight (8) electric chain hoists to move video projectors to various preset levels during worship services in a Houston, Texas church. The key requirements for the equipment were – the ability to have pre-programmed cues, the repeat accuracy of the hoist hook positions, the ability to adjust the hook positions if needed during and between cues of the service, and to not hear the hoists while in operation.
A global petrochemical manufacturer was looking at expanding production by adding additional Super Sack machines with 1 & 2 ton capacity motorized trolley electric chain hoists. The hoists required a special headroom dimension of 14.25” or less.
