CICMHE - Taxonomy
This material handling equipment (MHE) taxonomy was created by Michael G. Kay for use in IE 453: Facilities Design and IE 753: Material Handling Systems at North Carolina State University. The taxonomy is adapted from the MHE classifications presented in Table 1 of Chu et al. [1] and Section 6.6 of Tompkins et al. [2]. Although not explicitly cited, much of the information provided for each type of equipment has been culled from the following primary sources: Tompkins et al. [2], Kulwiec [3], Konz [4], and Ward [5].

Ergonomic Guidelines for Manual Material Handling
This free full color downloadable booklet was developed by EASE in partnership with CAL/OSHA, NIOSH and CNA; this booklet will help all companies, particularly small to mid-sized companies, recognize high-risk manual material handling work tasks and choose effective options for reducing their physical demands including: 1) Eliminating lifting from the floor and using simple transport devices like carts or dollies, 2) Using lift-assist devices like scissors lift tables or load levelers, 3) Using more sophisticated equipment like powered stackers, hoists, cranes, or vacuum assist devices, 4) Guiding your choice of equipment by analyzing and redesigning work stations and workflow.

Handling the US Economy: The Economic Impact of the Material Handling Industry
MHI commissioned this report with Oxford Economics to quantify the economic impact that this vital industry has across all industries and regions of the United States. That impact in 2018 amounted to more than $173.2 billion in GDP, as well as $39.3 billion in taxes to local, state and federal governments. In addition, the report found that the material handling industry supported nearly 1.6 million jobs in 2018, and workers in the industry earn $73,900 annual income on average, placing them well above the median income earners.

Analysis and Design of Integrated Material Handling Systems
