This document outlines the considerations and capabilities of various accessory products that can be deployed in a loading dock environment to help improve safety, operational efficiency, and asset protection.

A properly designed dock area can be a huge contributor in productivity or a complete bottleneck for material flow if not given the time it deserves. This guide was created to assist in the basic design of the loading dock and introduce the reader to fundamental concepts of dock design.

Guidance is proposed on how loading dock operators can utilize dock boards and dock levelers that comply with the ANSI MH30 standards to also comply with OSHA's walking-working surface rules to help promote safe loading dock operations.

In January 2017, a series of rules and regulations promulgated by the U.S. Occupational Safety and Health Administration (OSHA) pertaining to walking-working surfaces and fall protection standards were enacted. The rule affects a wide range of workers, including warehouse workers. Specific to warehouse workers, new rules pertaining to loading dock equipment were enacted. This document summarizes how an employer could apply American National Standards pertaining to loading dock equipment to demonstrate that hazards pertaining to run-off are adequately addressed.
