Price: $100.00This standard provides guidance for designers, manufacturers, sellers, installers, users, and governing bodies associated with power-operated vertical carousels and vertical lift modules.A vertical carousel is an enclosed system equipped with a series of shelves that work on a Ferris wheel concept, rotating around a track to deliver stored items to personnel through one or more ergonomically designed pick windows. A vertical lift module is an enclosed system that consists of one or two columns of tray storage with an inserter/extractor. For vertical lift modules with two columns of trays, the inserter/extractor is located between the tray storage. The vertical lift module inserter/extractor automatically locates and retrieves stored strays from the unit to deliver stored items to personnel through one or more ergonomically designed pick windows. Both vertical carousels and vertical lift modules are designed to utilize floor-to-ceiling height in a facility to optimize storage density. Shelves or carriers in vertical carousels and vertical lift modules are configurable to maximize storage density in a minimal footprint. The scope of this standard is to eliminate or minimize the hazards which can arise during installation, start up, operation, maintenance, testing, and dismantling of power-operated vertical carousels and vertical lift modules.ANSI MH24.2-2023 replaces ANSI MH24.2-2018. It provides expanded guidance for installations in high seismic locations and reformatting to better align with other national and international standards.

The installation of vertical lift modules helped this distributor of industrial engines consolidate space. The company warehouses 5,000 different parts that accommodate approximately 380 different engine configurations. Warehousing personnel now just walk a span of 27 feet in front of the vertical lift modules (VLM) versus covering 8,000 square feet under the old batch processing system. The VLMs have consolidated space, increased efficiency and enhanced ergonomics.

Stihl dealer in the Midwest can expect fast, accurate service when they need equipment, accessories or spare partsMississippi Valley Saw was founded in 1978 by Bob Joynt in Peoria, IL. It began serving the nation’s heartland by shipping chain saws, log splitters and accessories to about 70 independent dealers and lawn centers. Growth was swift, and in 1981 the company moved into a new location. Soon after, Mr. Hans Peter Stihl visited and asked them to drop all other lines and become an exclusive Stihl dealer. Mississippi Valley Stihl (MVS) was born.MVS investigated all possible solutions to their time, inventory and space issues and chose the Lean-Lift® Vertical Lift Module from Hänel Storage Systems. A bank of three units were installed initially, with a fourth lift added shortly after to keep pace with demand. The benefits of the Lean-Lifts® were immediate. Before the lifts, five or six people would work well into overtime to fill the day’s orders. After the lifts, a single person could get all orders received by 2 p.m. out by 4 p.m. the same day. Orders are picked faster with less walking and no more overtime. The lifts work together to cue the next part automatically so that the operator can move from lift to lift, minimizing any potential wait time for trays to be delivered to the access point. Totes and boxes are used to collect the various parts for each order, with a put-to-light system ensuring the right parts go into the right container. A pick-to-light system is used to pull fast moving items from bins nearby. The increased speed and accuracy afforded by the Hänel Lean-Lifts® allowed MVS to keep its commitment to its dealer network to provide the right part within 24–48 hours, even while stocking an ever-increasing inventory of parts.

A major aircraft manufacturer was expanding production facilities and seeking a way to better utilize valuable floor space by going vertical – installing mezzanines throughout to provide elevated working and walking surfaces for the assembly of large parts. This created the need to transfer tools, parts, and equipment between grade elevation and mezzanine elevation, within the smallest possible equipment footprint.

Global O-Ring and Seal, a leading supplier of O-rings, seals, and other sealing-related products, stocks thousands of SKUs. The management team decided to look for the most efficient picking system they could find. Global O-Ring decided the answer was in the form of vertical lift modules from Modula. They bought three Modula ML50D VLMs that provided 12,000 square feet of storage space on just 465 square feet of floor space, reducing their operational footprint by 90%. Global O-Ring purchased the Modula Warehouse Management System (WMS) that tracks and updates inventory in real-time. This was in turn connected to Global’s ERP to further boost efficiencies.

A Vertical Lift Module, or VLM is a storage system that consists of two parallel columns each of which is divided into fixed shelf locations that can hold a single storage module such as a tray or tote. The shelving locations are single deep. A tray or tote is inserted, extracted and transported between storage levels and picking locations via an elevator-like device with an automatic shuttle that travels up and down within the space between the storage columns. See also Carousels and/or AS/RS .

As a storage device, a horizontal carousel consists of a fixed number of adjacent storage columns or bays that are mechanically linked to either an overhead or floor mounted drive mechanism to form a complete loop. Each column is divided into a fixed number of storage location or bins which in most applications are constructed of a welded wire frame. Loads consisting of containers or totes may be inserted and retrieved either manually or by an automatic inserter/extractor mechanism. However, rotation of the carousel, whereby a specific storage location is brought to the picking location, is almost always controlled automatically. Carousels are a technology used to store items for eventual picking or retrieval. There are two primary types of carousels and one related technology, all of which operate under some form of computer control. Since the late 1990s, carousels have been placed under the more general category of AS/RS. See also Horizontal Carousels , Vertical Carousels , Vertical Lift Modules and/or AS/RS .

In l990, a group of visionary industry leaders, each a major manufacturer of industrial scissors lifts, came together to form Lift, an industry group of the Material Handling Industry (MHI). LIFT was chartered to address the challenges and opportunities facing this industry and to benefit the growing community of end users who utilize industrial scissors lifts to raise, lower, and position material. An objective of LIFT, along with creating recognition of the industry within the market place, is to develop and promote codes and standards in accordance with MHI guidelines for the manufacture of industrial scissors lifts with the best interest of the user in mind. The goals of LIFT are achieved through a variety of structured programs and activities. Publications like "A Guide to Industrial Scissors Lifts" is just one example of the educational materials designed to assist end users and specifiers of industrial scissors lifts. In addition to educational materials, LIFT is also actively involved in developing minimum industry standards and is Secretariat of ANSI Standard MH29.1 (Safety Requirements for Industrial Scissors Lifts) and ANSI Standard MH 29.2 (Safety Requirements for Industrial Tilters).

This Guideline was developed by the Lift Manufacturers ("LIFT"), an Industry Group of the Material Handling Institute ("MHI"); and represents suggested practices and considerations for precautionary labels on Industrial Scissors Lifts and Tilters. It is intended to provide useful information and guidance for owners, users, designers, purchasers and/or specifiers of such equipment. It is advisory only and should only be regarded as a simple tool that its intended audience may or may not choose to follow, adopt, modify, or reject. The following information does not constitute a comprehensive safety program, cannot guard against pitfalls in operating, selecting, and purchasing such a system, its repair or its replacement, and should not be relied upon as such.
