An Automated Storage and Retrieval System (AS/RS) is a combination of equipment and controls that handle, store and retrieve materials as needed with precision, accuracy and speed under a defined degree of automation. Systems vary from relatively simple, manually controlled order-picking machines operating in small storage structures to extremely large, computer-controlled storage/retrieval systems totally integrated into a manufacturing and distribution process. Generically speaking, AS/RS refers to a variety of computer-controlled methods for automatically depositing and retrieving loads to and from defined storage locations. Within an AS/RS environment one would find one or more of the following technologies: Horizontal Carousels, Vertical Carousels, Vertical Lift Modules, and/or Robotic Storage Retrieval Systems (RSR), the latter utilizing special storage retrieval machines to do the work needed to insert, extract and deliver loads to designated input/output locations within the aisles being served. The right application of AS/RS provides a long list of user benefits! The main difference between AGVs and AMRs is how the path they follow is determined. Most AGVs follow predefined paths, although there may be areas of the plant or warehouse where they have more freedom. AMRs can determine their own path, although they will attempt to follow suggested paths if they exist. This difference leads to differing methodologies for ensuring safe operation for the two types of vehicle. The Challenge: mobile robots with safety laser scanners cannot sense objects above a certain height.With recent technology, mobile robots have become highly efficient. Within their facility, Jungheinrich uses them to move goods, often in the same space as human personnel. They need to ensure their robots are not only operating efficiently, but also safely around their warehouse.
There are severe labor shortages within the agricultural industry, especially when it comes to seasonal workers. These workers are needed to perform manual, physically strenuous jobs, like transporting potted plants around an outside space, which is a necessity for horticulture. The plants need to be spaced out and periodically moved to different locations depending on their stage in the life cycle

Industrial Vehicle Access Recognition increases speed and ergonomics
This particular retailer deals with thousands of stock keeping units (SKUs) on a daily basis and was having a hard time accurately and efficiently monitoring inventory storage in their distribution center. When new items would come in, dimensioning data surrounding new items would often be entered into the warehouse management system (WMS), but most of the time the data would be default values and not be accurate to the item. The implementation of a dimensioning-weighing-scanning (DWS) system can help to improve processes and operations in a retail supply chain. The Master Data Analyzer (MDA) from SICK gives the customer access to all dimensioning data for each SKU.
Dallas Love Field (DAL) airport was having issues with congestion in its Checked Baggage Resolution Area (CBRA). In late 2018, they implemented an $8.8 million renovation to help. This renovation included infrastructure for a Radio Frequency Identification (RFID) system that enables airport employees to track baggage as it moves through the airport. This new system requires much less human involvement and mishandling of bags has reduced substantially by using RFID. By controlled testing, read rates for RFID tags can exceed 99%, while rates for barcode reading range from 93% to 97%, depending on the technology used.
The solution was to partner with Massachusetts-based 6 River Systems and implement their collaborative warehouse automation robot, Chuck. Chuck doesn’t need wires, cables, or stickers to move around. State-of-the-art sensors help him navigate in any warehouse without any new infrastructure. Chuck leads associates to picks, showing important task information — item image, description, quantity, location, etc. — on a display the size of a tablet. This keeps associates on task, spending less time searching for items.
