In order to make this a reality, distribution centers need to be designed to support multiple channels of distribution — retail, e-commerce, wholesale, etc., also known as omni-channel. Retailers are relying on high-speed sortation to accommodate this exponentially growing need.
A Warehouse control system (WCS) at automotive parts supplier Inter Cars S. A. allows complete control of the material flow from inbound to outbound in real time: picking, packaging and shipment are coordinated, throughput is optimised and costs are reduced. The products reach the right place in the desired time within the distribution center.

Andreas Backs is the new Director of Global Sustainability at the BEUMER Group. In this role, he is responsible for the development and implementation of the Group’s global sustainability strategy. His responsibilities include formulating a vision and goals, evaluating key issues and developing a roadmap that measures and improves performance in this area. He is also responsible for communicating with stakeholders and training of employees. Backs joined the BEUMER Group in September 2022. Prior to that, he worked for almost two years at an international management consultancy, among other posts as a sustainability expert. He was employed by the TÜV Nord Group for just over four years: first as a project manager, then as a product manager for sustainability. Finally, he led the sustainability report audit program. Andreas Backs completed his bachelor’s and master’s degrees in environmental science and technology at the Technical University of Berlin. “Global sustainability offers a special opportunity for the BEUMER Group,” says Andreas Backs. “That’s because we supply our products to industries and markets that are not considered sustainable.” He is also attracted by the opportunity to contribute to greater sustainability and solve global problems. The new Director of Global Sustainability takes on the role of an intermediary, as he says. “With our customers, I would like to evaluate our performance in key sustainability topics and improve it in the long term.” The aim is to create added value not only for users but also for the company’s own employees. Only with attractive and inviting workplaces can sustainable solutions for intralogistics be developed. BEUMER Group is an international leader in the manufacture of intralogistics systems for conveying, loading, palletising, packaging, sortation, and distribution. With 5,400 employees worldwide, BEUMER Group has annual sales of about EUR 1 billion. BEUMER Group and its group companies and sales agencies provide their customers with high-quality system solutions and an extensive customer support network around the globe and across a wide range of industries, including bulk materials and piece goods, food/non-food, construction, mail order, post, and airport baggage handling. FAM Group has been part of the BEUMER Group since May 2022. FAM plans, designs and manufactures turnkey plant and systems to extract, transport, load and store minerals, raw materials and goods. Through this acquisition, BEUMER Group has considerably strengthened its market position in the minerals and mining sectors. But what is FAM? FAM Group is a globally active manufacturer of conveyor systems which has its headquarters in Magdeburg. The mid-sized company is one of the world’s leading full-range bulk handling and processing equipment suppliers. The company’s journey started with the construction of steam engines in the mid-19th century. Over a period of just a few decades starting in the 1830s, Magdeburg witnessed the growth of one of Germany’s major industrial centers. In the early 20th century, the industrial areas in and around Magdeburg continued to grow. Increasing numbers of technical innovations first saw the light of day here – for example, the first double-portal excavators for coal mining, which were developed and built by the company. During the Second World War, and more precisely on 16th January 1945, Magdeburg was almost completely destroyed for the second time in its history. Due to the changed political circumstances, Magdeburger Maschinenfabriken – as FAM was called at the time – became a state-owned company. Following the reunification of Germany in 1990, industry in Magdeburg and the mechanical engineering sector in the area underwent a deep-seated structural change. The majority of the businesses in the area were unable to keep pace. FAM Förderanlagen Magdeburg, which was the new name of the company, was more fortunate: In 1993, it was privatized and able to make a fresh start. A difficult period of modernization followed. FAM stayed the course and developed from being a component manufacturer and supplier to become a general contractor offering custom-built conveyor solutions. Nowadays, the provider supplies state-of-the-art machines for the extraction, handling and preparation of raw materials. FAM is one of the global market leaders in its sector. The company stands out for its impressive, high-level engineering expertise. In this way, FAM is successfully continuing the tradition of mechanical engineering in Magdeburg. The Group has subsidiaries around the globe. It has customers in more than 80 countries. These rely on the bulk materials handling equipment, loading systems and opencast mining technology from Magdeburg to transport raw materials or extend port facilities. FAM offers consulting, planning, development, design engineering, assembly and commissioning services, all from a single supplier. However, the company’s range of activities also includes quality management and monitoring, maintenance, conversions and service. In addition to expanding the BEUMER Group’s portfolio, FAM Group’s expertise and global positioning also complement BEUMER’s competence in the planning of plant and equipment projects. The company brings planning, engineering, and the entire value chain to the BEUMER Group, as well as aftersales service. Somerset, NJ (March 17, 2023) — BEUMER Group, a leading global supplier of automated material handling systems, has developed its BG Pouch System® as the perfect solution for omnichannel and D2C operators in search of a solution for leaner e-commerce fulfilment. The innovative system expands BEUMER Group’s offering for the warehouse and distribution industry. Over the past several years, and particularly since the Covid pandemic, the biggest shift in the landscape has of course been the soaring growth of e-commerce. This has propelled many traditional retailers into establishing online stores to complement their physical stores in order to compete in the online world and reach more customers. At the same time, there is a clear trend in customers returning to physical stores. The combination of these two trends means that increasing numbers of retailers are finding that they must be present in both the physical and the digital worlds. The evolving omnichannel business model, combining bricks-and-mortar retail with e-commerce, is making order fulfillment more complex for logistics providers. Care must be taken to avoid these challenges, such as the high cost of handling returns.Leaner handling of returned itemsResearch shows that around 30% of all products ordered online are returned, with a resultant major cost impact on the distributor. Two factors that greatly increase this burden are the time it takes staff to handle and reclassify products and the cost in extra space needed to handle and store the goods. The BG Pouch System is designed to mitigate both these problems. This specialized e-commerce fulfillment technology is able to transport, sort, sequence and store both outbound and returned items in a much leaner sequence, requiring less manual intervention and reducing the number of product touches in the returns process by over 50%.This simplified handling of returns is achieved by placing each item directly into a pouch rather than sending it back to the regular storage area. The pouch system serves as an interim storage buffer for returned items. When goods are sold again, they can be sent for sortation and shipment directly from the dynamic buffer without ever being sent back to the main storage area and without having to be repicked. As such, the pouch system eliminates a tremendous amount of unnecessary manual handling to dramatically speed up and smooth intralogistics flows, allowing predictive picking to significantly reduce handling peaks. The BG Pouch System is also ideal for sites that are space constrained, as being ceiling mounted, it represents a massive saving on space and enables easy deployment when floor area is a limiting factor. Additionally, as a modular system, the BG Pouch System can also be readily scaled up when required with minimal installation time. Each BG Pouch System module can handle more than 10,000 pouches per hour. The system runs on a contactless magnetic drive that gives friction-free operation with the complete avoidance of energy- and maintenance-heavy pneumatics, which means lower operating costs through minimal wear on mechanical parts, less maintenance, a reduced number of spares and a minimum of cleaning requirements. The system is also highly flexible, being able to handle a wide range of packages from cartons to polybags and having a high weight capacity of up to 7 kg per pouch, making it ideally suited to handling a wide product profile, including print and media, pharmaceuticals and beauty products, and electronics.Stephan Heessels, Director for BEUMER Group Logistics Systems, comments: “We see a huge potential for our modern version of the pouch technology. The handling of returns is going to be an ongoing and growing challenge, and omnichannel distributors need to be able to optimize their processes for faster goods-to-consumer cycles and a vastly lower need for operators to touch items.”AboutBEUMER Corporation, headquartered in Somerset, NJ, is the wholly owned U.S. subsidiary of Beckum, Germany-based BEUMER Group.
